Basic information
Sample name: GD 1

Sample aka: Gondolin

Reference: J. W. Adams, A. I. R. Herries, K. L. Kuykendall, and G. C. Conroy. 2007. Taphonomy of a South African cave: geological and hydrological influences on the GD 1 fossil assemblage at Gondolin, a Plio-Pleistocene paleocave system in the Northwest Province, South Africa. Quaternary Science Reviews 26:2526-2543 [ER 3864]
Geography
Country: South Africa

State: North West

Coordinate: 25° 49' 37" S, 27° 50' 49" E
Coordinate basis: based on nearby landmark

Time interval: Early Pleistocene

Ma: 1.778

Age basis: paleomag

Geography comments: the exact coordinate is given by Wikipedia
the local section spans a normal-to-reversed polarity reversal that is "tentatively" assigned to "the very end of the Olduvai normal polarity period (1.95–1.78 Ma)" based on biochronology
the end of the Olduvai is at 1.778 Ma according to Sier et al. (2017, Quaternary Geochronology)

Environment
Lithology: siltstone

Taphonomic context: carnivore accumulation, cave, fluvial deposit, rodent accumulation

Habitat comments: "excavation centered on a naturally formed central channel" within a paleocave
the channel includes "a series of inter-stratified speleothem, in-washed sediments, and talus deposits" that are "homogeneous" and include extensively "reworked" fossils coming from a layer consisting "mainly of laminated, but sloping, siltstones underlain and overlain by flowstone deposits"
169 specimens were modified by carnivores, seven by small rodents, and 10 by porcupines, and although these taxa "did not directly occupy" the site and the fossils are transported they were responsible for the initial accumulation near the cave
there is no discussion of human artefacts

Methods
Life forms: ungulates,other small mammals

Sampling methods: quarry

Sample size: 66 specimens

Years: 2003

Sampling comments: "excavated during a four week field season in 2003"
carnivores and rodents are not present
