Geography
Country: Mexico

State: Yucatan

Coordinate: 20° 54' N, 90° 21' W
Coordinate basis: estimated from map

Geography comments: "The inner zone... is shallow (<0.5 m) and scarcely influenced by tides, with low salinity... The soft bottom sediment is a mixture of clay, limestone, sand, and organic matter"

Environment
Habitat: lagoon

Protection: unprotected

Substrate: ground surface

Habitat comments: "a karstic coastal lagoon"

Methods
Life forms: crustaceans,clams,snails,other invertebrates

Sampling methods: sieves

Sample size: 15764 individuals

Years: 1998, 1999

Seasons: wet or monsoon

Sampling comments: "Sampling was carried out seasonally during the 1998–1999 annual cycle. There was one sampling event during each of the dry, rainy, and windy seasons. The sampling was organized into a regular grid of 45 sampling sites distributed across the inner zone of the lagoon. The sampling grid consisted of nine 600–800 m long transects, perpendicular to the coastline, with a distance of 700 m among transects. Five sampling sites were selected per transect, with distances among them ranging from 100 to 250 m and covering the entire transverse section of the lagoon from one margin to the other... Sampling was conducted from a small boat at an average depth of 0.5 m... Two sediment samples were collected at each site with a Birge-Ekman grab (15 x 15 x 15 cm) and then transferred to plastic buckets; one sample was used for the study of macroinfauna... the organisms were separated using a 500-μm mesh sieve"
