Bois-de-Riquet (Lezignan-la-Cebe, Herault): A late Early Pleistocene archeological occurrence in southern France. Quaternary International 393:24-40 [ER 3889]
Geography
Country: France

State: Occitania

Coordinate: 43.493275° N, 3.425486° E
Coordinate basis: estimated from map

Time interval: Early Pleistocene

Section: US2

Unit number: 2

Unit order: below to above

Max Ma: 1.3

Min Ma: 1.1

Age basis: other

Geography comments: Located in the Middle Herault Valley, in a recently abandoned basalt quarry near Lezignan-la-Cebe. Locus 1 is a dense basalt outcrop in the mid-sector of the Lezignan-la-Cebe quarry

"The bio-chronological analyses carried out on small and large mammal assemblages now concur for an age around 1.3-1.1 Ma for level US2 which encloses the fossils and the basalt artifacts"

Environment
Lithology: siliciclastic (mixed)

Taphonomic context: fissure fill,fluvial deposit

Habitat comments: US1 basalt flow (corresponding to the "apex of the colonnade of the 1.57 Ma eruptive event recorded in the quarry") encloses the fossiliferous US2. US2 is an "infill situated within the eroded breach separating the layered base and the entablature of the basalt flowstone"

"US2: Stratigraphical Unit 2 (50 cm thick) is a sedimentary accumulation with numerous angular basalt blocks throughout. This unit has been divided into three sub-units"

US2 C: Base of US2, beige-grey coloured sands with some red clays and small-med size basalt blocks. Abundant and well-preserved microfauna. Well-fossilized but fragmentary large herbivore and carnivore remains.

US2 B: Bone slurry, indiscriminate bone/tooth fragments, coprolites

US2 A: Clayey sandy sediment, red-orange colour containing med-large sized angular basalt blocks, well-fossilized bones, and small coprolites
