Geography
Country: Australia

State: New South Wales

Coordinate: 34° 51' 25" S, 150° 35' 27" E
Coordinate basis: estimated from map

Time interval: Holocene

Section: 3682

Unit number: 3

Unit order: above to below

Max Ma: 0.00193

Min Ma: 0.00141

Age basis: radiocarbon (uncalibrated)

Geography comments: "The site is a sandstone rockshelter in the southern side of a steep-walled gully" located just above Bomaderry Creek, around 1 km up river from where it merges with the Shoalhaven River.
Coordinates based on map, obtained from Google Maps
Charred wood from two separate ends of the shelter yielded radiocarbon dates of 1930 +/- 60 years BP (Western end) and 1410 +/- 60 years BP (Eastern end).

Environment
Lithology: sandstone

Taphonomic context: human accumulation,rock shelter

Archaeology: hearths,stone tools

Habitat comments: The site is a sandstone rockshelter, with "two discrete areas of shallow occupation deposit with dates a few centuries apart, each surrounded by zones of much sparser occupation, indicating that the shelter was not used frequently".
Numerous stone artefacts were unearthed including flakes, eloueras, scrapers, fabricators, backed blades, hammer stones, and axes.
"The deposits are characteristic of those accumulated by basic daily subsistence and maintenance activities".
"Deposits from the western excavation area, which contain varied food remains and quantities of flaked stone, are in association with a possible hearth from Square B4".

Methods
Life forms: other large mammals, other small mammals

Sampling methods: quarry,screenwash

Sample size: 17 specimens

Sampling comments: "Test squares at three dispersed points at the rockshelter were excavated in 1970".
"The deposit was made up of well-defined strata which were excavated individually".
"As each stratum was shallow it was removed as a whole without vertical division into spits".
"Excavated material was sieved through a 3 mm screen".
In addition to the mammalian remains below, various plant (mainly Macrozamia seeds) and mollusc remains were also present, as well as several mostly unidentified reptile, bird, and fish remains. The mollusc remains are not listed here as their abundances were recorded as MNI (as opposed to NISP for the mammal remains).
